A Workshop on Research Idea Co-Creation with Reference to SF Prototyping
In his doctoral research, the organizer developed a Creative Writing Assistance system using machine learning and natural language processing. This system was inspired by the “Himitsu-dogu (ひみつ道具, secret items)” in “Doraemon.” Based on this experience, he thought that coming up with fiction-based research ideas might help students who are struggling with how to develop their existing research ideas or who are unable to come up with research ideas in the first place, so he organized this workshop on how to come up with fiction-based research ideas. In addition, following the characteristics of the GCL, the organizer aims to have participants co-create research ideas through discussions among diverse students with different specialties.
In this WS, the participants did group work on practicing how to develop research ideas by referring to science fiction works, using a method called “SF prototyping” as a reference. The organizer and participants introduced their favorite fictional works to each other at first. Then participants were asked to form a group to do group work to discuss their “research idea” inspired by a fictional story. After selecting a fictional work as a reference, they considered “visions that have not yet been realized” and developed their “research idea” for realizing them. The output of a group, “a research idea,” was summarized as slides.
The purpose of this WS was to discuss and practice the method of “co-creation of a research idea based on a fiction,” referring to the technique of “SF prototyping.” The organizer introduced the idea of “SF prototyping” referring to a recently published book 『SFプロトタイピング』 (宮本道人ら, 2021, 早川書房). This book introduces a case study of SF prototyping in business. In such cases, “outputting SF story through workshops” are mainly focused rather than “referring to existing fiction to come up with an idea.” In this WS, while referring to this book to introduce the idea of SF prototyping, the organizer did not set outputting SF as a goal. It is because the WS’s main purpose was “sharing the way of thinking a research idea based on a fiction.”
Three students, each with different expertise, participated in the workshop. They used the near-future science fiction anime “PSYCHO-PASS” (2012) as the source of their research idea. Inspired an avatar unit system in the animation, they discussed and come up with the idea: “In a society where loneliness and mental health are becoming more and more important issues, we need a ‘nosy’ interactive agent that can check on the user’s mental health without the user having to take active action.” There was a participant in the group who had expertise in mental health care, and the organizer felt that the group work was conducted in a way that made good use of the expertise of the participants.
To prevent infection with the COVID-19 infection, this WS was held online.
It is hoped that the research idea discussed in this workshop will lead to actual research plans in the future and that they will become collaborative projects among students across disciplines.
企画の背景
The purpose of this WS is to discuss and practice the method of “co-creation of a research idea based on a fiction,” referring to the technique of “SF prototyping.” The background is on the doctoral research of the organizer.
In his doctoral research, the organizer has been working on analyzing and generating stories and has developed a system for supporting story writing using machine learning. The research topic was inspired by “Himitsu Dogu” in “Doraemon.” Based on this experience, the organizer thought that coming up with fiction-based research ideas might help students who are struggling with how to develop their existing research ideas or who are unable to come up with research ideas in the first place.
In order to make the WS enjoyable for the participants, it was started by introducing their favorite works to each other.
どんなワークショップ?
First, the organizer explained the purpose of the WS. Then, everyone, including the organizer, gave a five-minute introduction of their favorite fictional work. Next, the organizer introduced the content of his doctoral research and explained how ideas from fiction had influenced the research project. He also gave a reference example of the expected deliverables (how to summarize “a research idea”) for this WS, using his doctoral research as an example.
A group work session followed this. The group decided which fictional work was the source of their research idea and then discussed what “unrealized vision” they could derive from this work and what they could do to realize it.
Then, the organizer explained “SF prototyping” and its application to research idea generation from his own viewpoint. The participants again had time for group work, summarized their research idea, and finally presented it to the organizer.

Initially, the organizer had planned to cover "Introduction to SF prototyping" in Plenary Session 1 without setting Plenary Session 2. However, the organizer changed the schedule and added the session because the organizer wanted to prioritize interaction in the group work early in the WS. |
ワークショップの成果
Three students participated in this WS and formed a group.
This group used the near-future science fiction anime “PSYCHO-PASS” (2012) as the source of their research idea and was inspired by the “3D-hologram-displayed support artificial intelligence – home secretary – avatar unit system” that appears and helps a character in the anime to live a comfortable life. They discussed and come up with the idea: “In a society where loneliness and mental health care are becoming more and more important, we need a ‘nosy’ interactive agent that can check on the user’s mental health without the user having to take active action.”
There was a participant in the group who had expertise in mental health care, and the organizer felt that the group work was conducted in a way that made good use of the expertise of the participants.

In this WS, the organizer did not only refer to “SF prototyping” but also applied the concept of “biblio-battle” and asked participants to introduce their favorite works in 5 minutes instead of self-introduction and ice break. In the announcement of the WS, the organizer had mentioned that we ask participants to prepare the 5-minutes introduction of one’s favorite work.
The participants attractively introduced their favorite works, and the organizer thinks the WS got off to a good start.
On the other hand, there is no denying that the necessity to make the introductions raised the hurdle for application. If a similar workshop is to be held in the future, it is necessary to consider creating a method that makes it easier for people to participate in the WS.
In this WS, the organizer introduced “SF prototyping” referring to『SFプロトタイピング』 (宮本道人ら, 2021, 早川書房). This book introduces a case study of SF prototyping in business. In such cases, “outputting SF story through workshops” are mainly focused rather than “referring to existing fiction to come up with an idea.” In this WS, while referring to this, the organizer did not consider outputting SF because the WS’s main purpose was “thinking a research idea based on a fiction.” Therefore, it may be said to be a different concept from the “SF prototyping” introduced by 宮本 et al. However, in this WS, the organizer dared to use the term “SF prototyping” based on the claim that “SF prototyping” has multiple meanings.
As a future prospect, it would be desirable to gather knowledge on “SF prototyping” more broadly and to systematize the method of conceiving research ideas based on fiction. Although this WS was completed with the compilation of research ideas, there is room for further study on whether research ideas co-creating with the method used in this workshop are helpful and how to evaluate them.
